Also, media brands changed dramatically over the years: 16x Sony DVD-R you buy today isn't remotely the same as Sony 16x DVD-R bought in 2007. The 2004 models had lousy compatibility with blanks to begin with, firmware updates didn't always help and frequently were not targeted at the media you specifically wanted to use. We are now in the rapidly-darkening twilight of the DVD recorder era, so you can't necessarily expect any ten year old unit (much less a temperamental Toshiba XS) will still be 100% fully functional. Also, you're using a generic LG replacement burner instead of the LG OEM, which might be incompatible with the OEM updates. I'm not sure it would be worth the trouble, however: the updates seemed to stop at "v14.1.5" sometime in late 2005. Perhaps one of these people still has the final firmware disc and can help you with an upload or mail you a copy. At this late date, your best chance would be sending PMs to the two or three most Toshiba-XS-savvy AVS members who've posted to the XS32-dedicated thread here. Last time I looked, owners usually found such firmware updates via the Toshiba Germany portal, but they no longer seem to offer updates for the XS series.
